Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Toriban - Tue Jul 24 2007

Just finished the book in about three sessions over the course of about fourteen hours.

I have to say, I'm not disappointed. I mean, I knew there would be deaths, but some of them were not the people I expected to die. And there were a lot more than I thought.

Highlight below for the spoiler on who all dies.

Spoiler follows, highlight to read:
Mad-Eye Moody
Dobby the Elf
Fred Weasley
Remus Lupin
Nymphadora Tonks
Vincent Crabbe
Severus Snape
Tom Riddle (Voldemort)
Bellatrix Lestrange

...and a bunch of others that were of slightly lesser importance.

The ending... well, I know some people will be disappointed in it, but I find it oddly quaint. Nicely simplistic. Anyway, its not about the ending, its about the journey.

And an interesting journey it was, full of twists and turns, and complexity and simplicity. I've seen these characters age and grow as I have, albeit at a slower pace than I have, and its strange to see their tales come to an end. Through the work of an expert pen (and occasionally, the work of an inexpert editor) we've seen them grow from children in children's stories to adults in darker and more important roles.

In closing, I believe it was the once-great Stephen King who said it best.

"...the distinction between 'children's literature' and plain old 'literature' has ceased to exist... This is a series not just for the decade, but for the ages."
