Apple launches new line of iPods, iPhone price
#1
With the Apple iPhone already out of the doors back in late June 2007, Apple has brought the touchscreen portion of the iPhone which makes scrolling through music much easier with a flick of a finger on the screen to the iPod.

The iPod Touch, as it is known, will come with two capacity options: 8GB and 16GB. But wait! There's more! Not only can you listen to your music, watch your favorite videos, but you can also browse the web and download songs from the iTunes store from within the iPod Touch. This iPod is the only iPod, other than the iPhone, that has wifi built in.

The iPod Touch comes with a 3.5" widescreen display, features the same multi-touch interface the iPhone has, and looks very similar to the actual iPhone itself, save for the speaker piece at the top of this MP3 player. Sorry, there aren't any other colors you can choose. For you technical folks, it does not have a mechanical hard drive like the regular iPod (now called iPod Classic) has, but a flash drive much like the first and current generation of the iPod Nano has. Because it uses a flash drive, it is less prone to mechanical hardware failures, and allows the iPod touch to be lighter in weight. At 4.3 inches (height) x 2.4 inches (width) x 0.31" (depth) and 4.2 ounces, this iPod touch could last you almost all day (22 hours) if you're listening to music, or about five hours with video. And, yes Virginia, it comes with Cover Flow; the Mail application the iPhone has is not included with the iPod Touch.

The iPod Touch will cost $299 and $399 for the 8GB and 16GB models, respectively, and will begin shipping this month and general availability at retail channels begins September 28th.

The regular iPod has also been refreshed, not only is its name being changed, but also the total capacity of the amount of songs one can store. The iPod Classic, as it is now known instead of just "regular iPod" or "iPod", will come with storage options of 80GB or 160GB. The 80GB model is thinner than the 160GB model, roughly a 0.12" difference between the depths of these two models. It still comes with the metallic back finish like the earlier generations of the regular iPod. Battery life for music will last roughly 40 hours, and for videos roughly 7 hours. Also includes Cover Flow.

The iPod Classic will cost $249 and $349 for the 80GB and 160GB models, respectively.

Ah, the iPod Nano. My, how you've changed so much. First, you looked like a smaller brother of the regular iPod, then later a look-a-like of the discontinued iPod Mini, what are you now? Well, once again it looks like a mix of the iPhone/iPod Touch/iPod Classic, but short, stumpy, and wider on the sides. The new larger 2" display and the larger scroll "click" wheel accounts for the iPod Nano's shorter height and longer width, and battery life will last you 24 hours with music and up to 5 hours with video. The 4GB model comes in only white, where the 8GB model comes in a flavor of colors, this ain't your regular black or white iPod Nano anymore. Also comes with Cover Flow

The iPod Nano will cost $149 and $249 for the 4GB and 8GB models, respectively.

---

The iPod Shuffle returns with the same look of the previous generation, but now sports some newer colors. The iPod Shuffle comes with the same colors as the 8GB iPod Nano, screen and Cover Flow not included.

The iPod Shuffle will cost $79 for the 1GB model.

---

That isn't all the news for today from Apple. The iPhone is, yes, getting a price reduction. It now costs $399 for the 8GB model, originally $599, however the carrier still remains with AT&T. The 4GB model of the iPhone has been dropped, and thus is discontinued, but there is nothing new to update on the iPhone other than the price reduction.

Following Steve Jobs', CEO of Apple, Inc, announcement of the price drop for the 8GB model of the iPhone, from $599 to $399, at roughly 1:00 PM EDT, Apple's stock (stock symbol AAPL) went from $144.28 and closed at $136.80. Yesterday, Apple recovered from its stock recession, starting at $135.25, reached a high of $137.57 at 3:06 PM EDT, and closed $135.06. The recovery came after an open letter from the Apple CEO apologizing to all customers who have already bought the iPhone in the past two months, after a flurry of arguments at websites dedicated to the iPhone and customer complaint emails sent to Jobs.

Thus, in the apology letter, Steve Jobs stated to any current owner of the iPhone bought from "... either Apple or AT&T, and who is not receiving a rebate or any other consideration, a $100 store credit towards the purchase of any product at an Apple Retail Store or the Apple Online Store". Although, it is only half of the discount of the new iPhone price, details on how to obtain the $100 store credit will be released on the Apple website sometime next week. "There is always someone who bought a product before a particular cutoff date and misses the new price or the new operating system or the new whatever. This is life in the technology lane." Indeed. Investors and Stock Brokers at Wall Street will see the consumers and stock holders reaction to Steve Jobs' apology letter, and the $100 store credit reflected on the AAPL stock; the stock market in the U.S. opens in 43 minutes, at 9:30 AM EDT.

In a related note for the iPhone, Apple has given the nod for the UK-based company O2 to sell the Apple iPhone to customers across the pond beginning November 9th, 2007.

For those wondering when the Apple iPhone will have 3G capabilities, the answer is not right now, but once the battery issues with the 3G chips (about 2-3 hours of battery life are lost compared to the regular 2.5G capabilities), Apple will begin to ship out the iPhone with 3G wireless technology.
